Buy & sell lines

The Buy / Sell line mode plots the two sides of the passive flow as independent lines instead of only their net. One side going vertical while the other flatlines is a very different market from both rising together, and the net alone cannot tell you which is happening.

Buy and sell lines on Sierra Chart

How to read them

  • Buy Line (green): resting liquidity stacked (+) or pulled (−) on the bid side over the primary window.
  • Sell Line (red): the same on the ask side.
  • Both rising: two-sided stacking. The net may be near zero even though the book is busy.
  • One rising, one flat: one-sided pressure. This is the case the net hides least well.
  • Crossing: the leading side has changed.

Buy Line minus Sell Line is the Passive Flow line of the flow decomposition.

With executions or placement only

The Buy / Sell Lines setting chooses the pair:

  • With executions (default): the two passive sides as they are. A trade removes resting size, so executions are in these lines. This is the readout of earlier versions.
  • Placement only: each trade is added back to the side it consumed. Sellers hit bids, so sell volume returns to the Buy Line; buyers lift offers, so buy volume returns to the Sell Line. What remains is orders placed and cancelled, and Buy minus Sell is Placement Flow.

Resistance and Support are built from whichever pair is on screen. Changing the pair starts that band's warm-up again, over its full lookback.

The Delta line

The Delta Line is Buy Line minus Sell Line, the Delta line of version 2. It reads at a glance whether the balance between the two sides is growing or shrinking. With executions it equals Passive Flow; with placement only it equals Placement Flow.

It is off by default. Set Show Delta Line to Yes and click Apply: it is drawn in white, with its full history. Its colour is on the Subgraphs tab.

The Delta Line in white, under the Buy and Sell lines

The Delta Line has its own scale and no band of its own: Buy/Sell Resistance and Support stay with the two sides, and it draws no arrows.

Resistance and Support

Both lines share one pair of dotted Buy/Sell Resistance and Buy/Sell Support lines: the average of the two sides' means, plus and minus the configured number of standard deviations (using the average of the two sides' standard deviations). See Support & Resistance for the two settings.

Buy and sell lines with their Resistance and Support lines

Setting it up

Set Line Mode to Buy / Sell and click Apply. The subgraphs are named Buy Line, Sell Line, Delta Line, Buy/Sell Resistance and Buy/Sell Support; each band also has a (provisional) subgraph, used while it warms up. Choose the pair with Buy / Sell Lines and switch the Delta Line on with Show Delta Line.

Risk disclosure. Futures and forex trading contains substantial risk and is not for every investor. An investor could potentially lose all or more than the initial investment. Risk capital is money that can be lost without jeopardizing one's financial security or lifestyle. Only risk capital should be used for trading and only those with sufficient risk capital should consider trading. Past performance is not necessarily indicative of future results. The possibility of profit is not equal to the possibility of loss: losses can be larger than any gains, and you can lose more than you invest.

The Pulling & Stacking Indicator is an analytical tool. It does not provide investment advice or trade recommendations, and nothing it displays is a signal to buy or sell.

Hypothetical performance disclosure. Hypothetical performance results have many inherent limitations, some of which are described below. No representation is being made that any account will or is likely to achieve profits or losses similar to those shown; in fact, there are frequently sharp differences between hypothetical performance results and the actual results subsequently achieved by any particular trading program. One of the limitations of hypothetical performance results is that they are generally prepared with the benefit of hindsight. In addition, hypothetical trading does not involve financial risk, and no hypothetical trading record can completely account for the impact of financial risk of actual trading. For example, the ability to withstand losses or to adhere to a particular trading program in spite of trading losses are material points which can also adversely affect actual trading results. There are numerous other factors related to the markets in general or to the implementation of any specific trading program which cannot be fully accounted for in the preparation of hypothetical performance results and all which can adversely affect trading results.
