Limitations

General

  • Requires depth-of-market (L2) data for the traded instrument: the indicator measures the order book itself.
  • The σ band needs its full warm-up before alerts are live; earlier readings are from shorter windows or are marked provisional.
  • At the default settings the deep-book warning appears only occasionally; two settings change that, and they also change the main flow readings.
  • The indicator is an analytical tool; nothing it displays is investment advice or a trade recommendation.

MotiveWave

  • Live data. The indicator measures the live order book from the moment you add the study. It does not fill in the history already on the chart.
  • Replay is not supported. MotiveWave's Replay Mode does not replay the order book, so the indicator pauses and shows REPLAY - not supported, use live data until Replay Mode is off. If a chart stays frozen after leaving Replay Mode, restart MotiveWave.
  • It needs market depth (DOM) and trades for the instrument.
  • Fractional sizes (for example bitcoin) are counted in millionths: 1 BTC reads 1,000,000. The shapes, bands, σ readings and arrows are unaffected.
  • Changing the Primary Window clears the lines already drawn in the indicator's panel. It stays empty until the next bar starts, then the lines carry on in their colours (no grey zero stage). The console keeps its readings.
  • Restart MotiveWave after updating the indicator; until then a chart may keep running the earlier version, or stop updating.
  • Each chart warms up on its own, also a second chart of the same instrument.
  • An open settings window is not refreshed. After Apply it goes on showing the values from before for what the indicator changes itself (the licence, Reset To Default Parameters, Show Terms and Conditions, the console boxes) until you reopen it. Its older values are not applied again by a later Update or Apply. Use Update for those steps.
  • The console has no armed sign for alerts: the bell looks the same whether or not a band is enabled, and nothing shows whether the global alerts are on. Saving new thresholds re-arms the bands, so a band can alert at once. After a pause or a stale period the bands are armed again too, so a reading still beyond its threshold alerts once more.
  • Console Mode on a second chart of an instrument has no effect while the first chart's study is on, and it is not greyed out there.
  • With Console Always On Top on, MotiveWave's alert popup and the question when you shut MotiveWave down can open behind the console. Minimize the console to reach them.
  • Opening the study's settings can minimize the console (MotiveWave does this, also with Always On Top off). The right-click menu item Show Pulling & Stacking Console brings it back.

Risk disclosure. Futures and forex trading contains substantial risk and is not for every investor. An investor could potentially lose all or more than the initial investment. Risk capital is money that can be lost without jeopardizing one's financial security or lifestyle. Only risk capital should be used for trading and only those with sufficient risk capital should consider trading. Past performance is not necessarily indicative of future results. The possibility of profit is not equal to the possibility of loss: losses can be larger than any gains, and you can lose more than you invest.

The Pulling & Stacking Indicator is an analytical tool. It does not provide investment advice or trade recommendations, and nothing it displays is a signal to buy or sell.

Hypothetical performance disclosure. Hypothetical performance results have many inherent limitations, some of which are described below. No representation is being made that any account will or is likely to achieve profits or losses similar to those shown; in fact, there are frequently sharp differences between hypothetical performance results and the actual results subsequently achieved by any particular trading program. One of the limitations of hypothetical performance results is that they are generally prepared with the benefit of hindsight. In addition, hypothetical trading does not involve financial risk, and no hypothetical trading record can completely account for the impact of financial risk of actual trading. For example, the ability to withstand losses or to adhere to a particular trading program in spite of trading losses are material points which can also adversely affect actual trading results. There are numerous other factors related to the markets in general or to the implementation of any specific trading program which cannot be fully accounted for in the preparation of hypothetical performance results and all which can adversely affect trading results.

Chart images. The chart images on this site show the indicator's display on market data, to explain what it draws. They are not trading results or trade recommendations, and the risk and hypothetical performance disclosures above apply to them. We publish no trading performance.

Virtual currencies. Some chart images show cryptocurrency instruments. View CFTC advisories, as they contain more information on the risks associated with trading virtual currencies.
