Indicator states

The indicator does not present dead or unseeded output as signal. This is state display, not data filtering: the engine keeps reading the raw stream, and the display says what state the data is in.

Warming up, stale, and live: three real tiles

Warming up

The indicator comes up in stages, so you are not left waiting on a blank panel. With the default settings (5-minute primary window, 5× lookback):

After What you get
5 min (one window) The flow lines. Total, Passive and Aggressive Flow are exact once one full window has been seen.
10 min A fully seeded 2-minute reading in the headline, e.g. Total Flow +1.9σ (2m) - 5m band 40%, and a provisional band on the chart.
15 min The 3-minute reading takes over the headline.
25 min The primary band is fully seeded: Total Flow +4.2σ (5m). Alerts can fire.
50 min The 10-minute ladder cell is live.

Provisional readings are estimates. Until a band has its full lookback it rests on few independent samples and tends to be too narrow, so early σ values read high. They are marked so you can tell: a ~ before the value (5m ~+2.1σ), a muted badge colour in the console, and a dashed band on the chart (grey by default; its colour is the band's "(provisional)" entry on the Colors tab), which is drawn dotted in its own colour once it is fully seeded. From the first trade or order book change after the study starts (or after its warm-up starts again), until one full window has been seen, the lines are drawn grey, at zero, in the middle of the panel; they then step up to their readings. The first provisional band is drawn rising from the zero line over one bar. Provisional readings never trigger alerts.

Before the first stage the console shows progress: WARMING UP 12% - 25 min band. Each window warms independently, so the ladder fills in from left to right.

Ways to shorten the wait

  • The indicator warms from live data. It measures the order book from the moment you add it and does not fill in the history already on the chart. A second chart of the same instrument warms up on its own.
  • Leave the platform running. The indicator loads with the platform and warms while you do something else.
  • Most setting changes do not restart the warm-up. Clicking Update keeps the flow engine running. It starts over if Level Depth or Count Levels Entering The Depth changes, if the study is removed and added again, when MotiveWave restarts, when Replay Mode is turned off, or if the data's clock jumps back by more than 5 seconds or forward by more than 50 minutes. Changing the S/R Lookback Multiplier re-warms the bands over the new lookback, and changing Buy / Sell Lines re-warms the Buy / Sell band, without touching the flow lines; the console tile then starts again at WARMING UP 0% until each window's band has warmed again.
  • A shorter Primary Window or S/R Lookback Multiplier warms faster, but changes what the readings mean; see calibrating the parameters.

Stale

A data stream that stops without notice can look like "flow went quiet", which reads as information when it is an outage. If no events arrive for the configured number of seconds (default 30):

  • the bar being drawn turns grey, and so does the line leading into it (earlier bars keep their colour); if events come back while that bar is still being drawn it takes its colour again, otherwise it stays grey,
  • the tile headline turns orange: STALE - no events since 09:41:07,
  • the ladder shows --,
  • alerts are suppressed until events resume.

Waiting for order book data

WAITING FOR ORDER BOOK DATA means the instrument has not delivered a single depth event yet: no depth subscription, or a market that has not opened.

  • After 15 seconds without order book data, the tile's state line adds No Level II depth received.
  • After 60 seconds with no market data at all, it reads No market data received. Check the data connection, and that the instrument is trading. instead.

Order book data stopped

If trades keep arriving but the order book has not changed for the stale timeout (30 seconds by default), the tile shows, in orange, ! ORDER BOOK DATA STOPPED - trades are arriving but the book is not updating, so Passive Flow is frozen. Check the Level II feed; alerts are paused. The bar being drawn turns grey, and alerts and arrows pause until the order book updates again. The tile's readings keep their colours meanwhile; only their Aggressive Flow part still moves, so read them as frozen until the warning clears. The stale timeout is the Stale After (Seconds) setting. Set very low (for example 1 second), one quiet second is enough: this warning can flash for a moment while the order book is in fact live, and STALE can come and go between trades. Keep it at 10 seconds or more. The tile's state line also says when no depth arrives at all (see above); MotiveWave's DOM for the instrument should show price levels changing as the market moves. Right after the licence becomes active again (for example after you release this computer and activate it again), the indicator reads the order book afresh and does not show this warning while it does; the warm-up carries on (see release this computer). A book that really stops still shows it.

Paused

PAUSED means the indicator is not producing output on this computer, and it draws nothing: the bars of the paused minutes stay empty (no line, not even at zero), and the lines are not joined across them afterwards. The last bar drawn before the pause keeps its colour: a pause is not shown as stale. The study's name on the chart stays the same (MotiveWave does not redraw a study's name when it changes), so look at the tile or MotiveWave's log for the state. The text after it says why:

Tile shows What to do
PAUSED - licence required (see the indicator settings) Enter your licence key and activate it (see activating your licence).
PAUSED - checking your licence Wait a few seconds while the licence answers.
PAUSED - licence in use on another computer Release it on the other computer, then tick Activate Licence again here.
PAUSED - could not reach the licence server Check your internet connection: the indicator runs only while it can confirm the licence online, and starts again once it connects.
PAUSED - licence not active (see the indicator settings) Licence Status says why; activate again, or write to contact@stacksignal.com.

The same message, in full, is in Global notifications. checking your licence shows on the tile while an activation waits for its answer, often only for a moment; the tile's log writes a new reason only once it has lasted 10 seconds. Once the licence is active again the tile goes back to its reading, without a STALE in between. After a pause, a band is armed again, so a reading still beyond its alert threshold alerts once more (see notifications).

Replay

REPLAY - not supported, use live data means MotiveWave's Replay Mode is on. MotiveWave's Replay Mode does not replay the order book, so the indicator pauses: the tile shows this line with grey badges, and the indicator draws, marks and alerts nothing. The bars from where the replay starts are blank; the bars before it keep their lines. The study's name on the chart stays the same. MotiveWave's log gets one line when Replay Mode goes on and one when it goes off. When Replay Mode is off, the tile starts again at WARMING UP 0% (on a quiet feed, WAITING FOR ORDER BOOK DATA until the first event) and the indicator starts its warm-up again (see warming up); no line joins the readings from before the replay to the new warm-up. If a chart stays frozen after leaving Replay Mode, restart MotiveWave.

Risk disclosure. Futures and forex trading contains substantial risk and is not for every investor. An investor could potentially lose all or more than the initial investment. Risk capital is money that can be lost without jeopardizing one's financial security or lifestyle. Only risk capital should be used for trading and only those with sufficient risk capital should consider trading. Past performance is not necessarily indicative of future results. The possibility of profit is not equal to the possibility of loss: losses can be larger than any gains, and you can lose more than you invest.

The Pulling & Stacking Indicator is an analytical tool. It does not provide investment advice or trade recommendations, and nothing it displays is a signal to buy or sell.

Hypothetical performance disclosure. Hypothetical performance results have many inherent limitations, some of which are described below. No representation is being made that any account will or is likely to achieve profits or losses similar to those shown; in fact, there are frequently sharp differences between hypothetical performance results and the actual results subsequently achieved by any particular trading program. One of the limitations of hypothetical performance results is that they are generally prepared with the benefit of hindsight. In addition, hypothetical trading does not involve financial risk, and no hypothetical trading record can completely account for the impact of financial risk of actual trading. For example, the ability to withstand losses or to adhere to a particular trading program in spite of trading losses are material points which can also adversely affect actual trading results. There are numerous other factors related to the markets in general or to the implementation of any specific trading program which cannot be fully accounted for in the preparation of hypothetical performance results and all which can adversely affect trading results.
